LAD would be an amazing album if it were a single disc. The cut tracks could’ve easily been tossed to No Way Out.
Playa Hater is just another Jealous Guy — which itself was beyond horrible. Going Back To Cali leaned on a lazy sample and after mans gets killed you wonder WTF was he thinking going to Cali in the first place.
RTD sounds completely different from LAD (even his voice) and I prefer it even tho the mixing could’ve been a of tighter. And if we are keeping it 100, RTD “feels” a lot like Me Against The World in hindsight, but not as mature.
LAD is just too bloated and coming from a time when folks thought the double album thing was a good idea since it worked (in Hip Hop) for AEOM even tho other non rap artists already did it before.
Rtd biggie is offkey and a call back to the styles war era that Nas ushered out in 94.
It just so happened the marketing real estate that badboy had with Arista. Put this out of the culture's hands as far as a rating.
Later when biggie had progressed in skill to have an entire album br unbelievable level. On the remix to one mo chance. Is why lad is given the pass it is given. Rtd is given a pass because of its marketing permeation to be bigger than a cultural submission styled release.
By the time rtd dropped big was outdated and hence why the later singles and bside on juicy all feature the last records recorded in the timeljne ofrtf. When big had up'd skill.
Strategically puff always posed big and badboy with arista in a pop demographic. Which eliminated any cultural grumbling from having an effect I n big's draw culturally. Plus big vehemently let it be known in pr as his cultural out. That big did not like puff and his direction. Plus big was out asap after having to sell his publishing to eat.
