Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
Gas was $0.25/gal. as was the NY Times in the 70's.

Look at them, now.

Wages have yet to catch-up to the cost of living. The chart is the result.

Still, though...the percentage of people still living with family goes hand in hand with the percentage of people living with their spouses.

That's a bigger factor than CoL

The cost of living is THE factor. That's why people are living with family longer. A married couple is far more likely to stay with parents until they can afford their own place.

This is due to immigration.

Immigrants are much more likely to remain at home with family until married or even beyond that.

In my experience Americans born here especially those whose families have been here for generations move out and get their own places much more often.

I used to work with an Asian man (2nd generation) who was an accountant making $75K in his mid thirties and he lived at home with his parents. He said since he had no wife and kids he had no reason to move out.

Look at the numbers. It's the same percentage increase in Living with Family and it is the decrease in Living with Spouses.

#GMB is the reason people are staying home.

If it was CoL, there wouldn't have been a jump in people living Alone.

Realistically staying with your parents until you are economically stable should be normalized anyways. I noticed a lot of immigrants seem to have an easier time building wealth than Americans do simply because they stay 3 or 4 generations deep under one roof with everyone contributing financially.
We lucky to just a dual income household, meanwhile they rocking with 6 or 7 income ones.

Way waaaaaay easier to get $$$ right now

i'm not sure this is true. if that were the case, you wouldn't see so many 25-34 year olds living at home or with relatives. they aren't washed. your average 34 year old grew up with the internet.

back in 1970 you could work as a cashier or waitress and have enough money for your own apartment AND a new car.

it's prolly hella easy to make 1000$ real quick via the internet esp if you are female but actually making a living off it is easier said than done.

You're conflating two different things. People live alone because they're not married, but, the reason people are staying with parents/relatives is due to the cost of living.

Quick example: a 1 br. apartment in NYC near Washington Park in the 70's would run you about $300-400. Now, that same apartment is $2,500.

Wages have YET to catch-up to the CoL.
