There are certain things that we as a people, who are routinely targeted by the police and law enforcement, should have knowledge of. Yeah it's cool to know where to get the best weed on Thurs., or who to go to to get 2 for 1 on Vision Cards, but we should know when and where to invoke our right to remain silent, our right against illegal search and seizure, our miranda rights. How to demand to see a warrant if they want to enter your house. How you don't have to provide them with a driver's license if they stop to question you while you are walking.

If you don't know your miranda and constitutional rights you deserve to get locked up.

Mom taught me with when I was 13 or so. But, it's a fine line, if you are taken in for questioning, or placed under arrest, don't say anything, I remember my Mom telling me, no matter what is said, what the threat is, nothing, not a word. And they will threaten you, harass you, embarrass you, intimidate you, reason with you, act like a friend, etc. Don't say anything. If you are pulled over, or have police contact for another reason, watch your words, but don't just not say anything, like a psycho/mute.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know their basic constitutional rights. Plus, its easy to get frustrated with the police and argue with them or try to justify your actions, especially if you don't think you did anything wrong. That can be used against you, even if you're innocent.

Cops have several ways of pressuring people to waive their rights and those techniques work all the time (despite how often these tactics screw over innocent people). For example, police may tell you "if you don't have anything to hide then just let us take a look around" and plenty of people, guilty or innocent, would consent and waive their rights from that line alone.

I'm not demonizing cops, but the legal system is flawed and innocent people do get caught up way too often.
