LIG and Distant relatives WITH EASE

This.

I'm starting to wonder how old these nikkas are and if they lack any form of common sense. How the fukk can you even compare these albums to WTT and MCHG??? Distant Relatives is one of the GREATEST pieces of art in the history of music. That album should have been named Magna Carta Holy Grail.

No song on WTT or MCHG touches the brilliance of Patience from DR or the raw gritty smack the shyt out ya fav. dj 90's era flawless rap on Locomotive from LIG.

as dope as Somewhereinamerica and Murder to Excellence are...NAH!!!

you know what...fukk it....compare and contrast nikkas!

If that's the case, then you have Home Cooked Hip Hop and then you have Fast Food Hip Hop, both types of Hip Hop have existed in the 90s and today:youngsabo:

What exactly about LIG is "home cooked"? Versus this Jay joint being "fast food"?

I'm easily one of the most "underground" cats on this site. Grew up in NY during its best years, so I know all about hating on what's "commercial". But it's not the 90's anymore, so that same dichotomy doesn't apply. ALL this shyt is commercial now. So I don't get what you're saying.

Well, I was implying with respect to the quality and subject matter of the lyrics, the sound and quality. I mean when you listen to DR vs. MCHG, don't you here the difference? Album appears to be marketed for the Hip Hop Purists and the other is marketed more for the everyday run of the mill Hip Hop fan. One clearly has better quality, lyrics, and subject matter, while the other album lacks those same qualities and sounds like it could have been made in less than a week. Just some examples.

I'm a purist, and I think dope comes in all forms. Subject matter has nothing to do with what's geared toward purists. Being a "purist" means that you want an artist to stay within the direction of their "old" albums, or just wanting to see things stay "the same". That means staying true to what it is you've always done. It's never meant that an MC can't speak on certain topics or had to stray away from any either. Black Thought spoke on this when The Roots dropped Phrenology and said new Hip Hop fans have been brainwashed into thinking "real Hip Hop" is limited to being certain things or certain sounds.

You're talking about marketing and things that have nothing to do with the actual music. Companies don't make beats or write rhymes. This is what's being twisted. Liking something that you think most people wouldn't, doesn't make you a purist. Being a purist means that the same values that made the golden eras of the culture so dope, are what you look for in your music. You want to see that artist stay true to what it is they do or have done. That's all it is. It's not to attack what you think most people would like or all that. That's that shyt that posers do. Peep Questlove's latest interview with RBMA. He said being underground doesn't mean you have to hate on what's getting the most attention. He's right.

Personally for me, Life is Good and Distant Relatives got it by a mile. I'm extremely biased though since I'm Jamaican and hearing a hip-hop/reggae album is like the holy grail for me. I couldn't even finish listening to WTT even though Kanye and Hov is 2 of my favorite artists.

I don't think I can relate to Jay-Z and Kanye any more though. The shyt they talk about is just outside of my price range. On DR and Life is Good, they had songs that were relatable to me. My pops was a Garveyite so Distant Relatives focus on Africa was a subject that hit home for me. Life Is Good had songs like Daughters, Cherry Wine, and Bye Baby which again, were extremely relatable to a regular nikka like me.

Hov spot is solidified forever IMO as probably the greatest, most consistent rapper to ever do it, but After LIG and MCHG, Nas solidified his spot as my current favorite artist.
