Light can’t escape once it enters the event horizon.

This isn’t light coming from inside the black hole. It’s light coming from behind and curving around it.

Per the general theory it should be pulling the light in, no?

Yes, but it doesn’t really “pull” or “suck” shyt in. The black hole warps space around it and light near enough to the black hole follows the path of the warped space. All mass warps the spacetime around it - you are warping the spacetime around you now, negligibly of course.

If you were in your spaceship (outside of the event horizon) and pointed a beam of light directly toward the black hole it would follow a path toward the black hole never to escape.

However you can point your laser beam at an angle to the side of the black hole. In that case it may follow a path of warped space that travels toward but around the black hole.
