Soundscan/Billboard tracks what sold. RIAA tracks what shipped, and awards certificates based on that. Now they're taking into account streams as well.

So ultimately it's irrelevant who goes gold or plat nowadays, because Soundscan/Billboard ain't even using the same criteria.

People are so used to judging an artist success with physical sales that they don't want to adjust to a world where physical sales don't mean much. Which is how it is today.
