During a live taping of Deadline's New Hollywood Podcast with the African-American Film Critics Association, The Photograph star Lil Rel Howery and Hair Love director and Oscar winner Matthew A. Cherry discussed several issues circulating in Hollywood, including topics concerning diversity, opportunities and more.

In a discussion on helping and giving opportunities to other creatives, "I love Tyler Perry and I'm proud of him...but I told myself I'm going to say something because I don't agree with that. You can't write a show called Sistas and you're not a sista," he said to applause. "So you don't want no suggestions or nothing?"

"I know we talk a good game about 'This is what I'm doing, I'm doing this, I'm doing that.' Now, I'm talking, but I'm putting my money where my mouth is," he continued. "I don't have what he got yet, but as I climb up here, I'm [going] to do even more of that. We gotta do better man. It's all talk, but if you're really on that, then give people jobs, bro. You can't base nothing on one writer's room, brother. That means you didn't hire good writers. Find more writers."

Last month, Perry ignited discourse within his fanbase and casual fans alike when he released a video of him discussing the scripts he had written for his various shows.

Tyler Perry recently ignited a lot of discourse on social media after he revealed he was the sole writer for all of his shows currently on the air, as well as several that are in development.


So... Mfers is mad because this nikka writes his own shyt dolo.... This is the absolute fukking peak of fukking stupidity. Many great writers write alone. Aaron Sorkin loves to fellate himself for being the main and sole writer on many of his projects and no one has a fukking problem with it. Nobody is at Stephen Kings necks or any other shyt.

But a Black man, owning his shyt, making his money, and owning 100% of the writing credit is a problem. Now a Black man can't write a show about black women because he's not a woman himself. Its funny how all these rules and restrictions pop up just as soon as the motherfukker profiting has a certain amount of melanin. The hate on Perry has always rubbed me wrong. I don't like his work, its corny to me, but the hate he gets is completely misplaced and suspicious as fukk.

First he was emasculating men (nikka whatever...) by wearing a dress. Now he making completely different shyt and they still got beef. FOH and let that weird nikka eat.
