It always sounded like he simply put together words that rhymed or fit the instrumentals and called it a day. Only a few of there songs had a theme that made any sense.I like Nirvana but much their acclaim is due to Kurts death and the fact that they had the 1st big hit song and album of the 90s alternative rock movement.

Kurt is held in a higher regard because he died young and his legacy is he was this rebellious tragic tortured artist who couldn't take the pressures of fame. You also have to remember some conspiracy theorist think he was killed too.
Axel created a lot of enemies during his prime, is hard to work with and has grown older, hasn't aged gracefully so his story isn't as "attractive" despite being superior to Cobain as a performer and songwriter.
