i remember when run dmc came out a lot of heads didnt fukk with them cause they were the kings of selling out...most hip hop heads thought they were corny...im sure they brained washed people into thinking that they were really the king of rock :stopitslime:

Came to post something similar to this. Especially when a lot of people look at Wayne, from a fashion standpoint the same way people used to look at Run DMC. True shell-toes and leather wasn't no where near the level of flamboyance as the cheetah-print spandex and whatnot that Wayne wears, but when you make the 1983>2010 adjustment it's a fair comparison when you talk about rebellion as a fashion statement.

Also from the other obvious standpoint, Run's big bro ran the fukking label (eventually Def Jam for the history buffs), the biggest most relevant if not the only respectable outfit for rap music. Russ' JOB was to brainwash folks into liking his acts, and that's not taking nothing from Run DMC they were dope, but by the same token don't take nothing away from Jay.

:what:....it did come out on a major label. It just wasn't defjam.
No it was released on Roc a fella and distributed by Priority.
And priority operated independently in 96.

What the fukk do you think independent is? Selling your cd on the corner?

Bro, I dunno how old you are...But I remember and know for a fact Priority was not a damn independent lable. You made a stupid statement, just accept it and call it quits.

nah my man. this is a terrible comparison. secondly, it has nothing to do with the thread.

and again, its a terrible comparison. run dmc wore what was hot in the streets. Russell told run & dmc to dress like jam-master jay. and the rest is history. comparing that to lil wayne dressing in spandex is ridiculous.

and run dmc was NEVER on def jam. they blew up before def jam existed.

. Priority was able to achieve unrivaled success as an independent label by developing a precedent-setting "street-based" formula of underground marketing which bypassed mainstream radio.

After releasing compilations and albums by The California Raisins in the mid-1980s, Priority Records became one of rap's most prominent independent labels in the late 1980s thanks to its release ofEazy-E's Eazy-Duz-It and N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton. The success of those albums, which were released in conjunction with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records, led to Priority's subsequent distribution deals with such prominent Rap labels as Rap-A-Lot, Death Row, Roc-A-Fella and No Limit, among others.

Unless Billboard etc are lying, you've just admitted to making stupid statements and not behaving according to your age (your thesis).

You're right, they were never actually signed to Def Jam, just managed by Russ, I got ahead of myself but they received all the perks of a Def Jam artists and even HEADLINED Def Jam tours and enjoyed the cross promotion. All the same, the point is there was a direct link, that could pose a conflict between the artists and and a record exec, so less Mariah/Mottola, more Pebbles/LA Reid lol. Either way they had all the data to 'access a target audience' rather than 'build a core audience'

Also, on the whole style front, the fact that Run and DMC were told what to wear was something that I wasn't gonna mention because I didn't think it was fair, but it just screams marketing scheme, "if this is whats hot in the streets, and we dress like this, then the fans..." I'll let you make your own 'brainwashed' correlation. Like I said, it's not a fair knock on them, I thought it was a smart move, and once again I always thought Run DMC was dope, but again, DMC has a short memory.

And finally man, you've shot down several responses to this thread by saying "that's not what DMC was talking about" or "you're not comprehending what he was saying", which of course is your right, you are the thread starter, but can you articulate what DMCs point was when insinuating that certain artists' fans are brainwashed into thinking they're what's hot since you're the only one that seems to have a real grasp of it?

what perks? if it wasn't for run dmc, there would be no def jam!!!! they didn't have access to the data. THEY BUILT THE DATABASE.

dog, this is the entertainment business. show me a rapper and i'll show you a marketing scheme.

the point DMC was making is that jay and wayne aren't really hot. their albums drop, theyre met with mostly negative reactions but the chit gets shoved down peoples throats anyway. that and the fact that theres virtually no other options to choose from anymore. 90% of mainstream artists are being dictated to you. I mean, how many artists are consistently out there these days? like 10 or 15? wow. and most of they are either :flabbynsick: or industry plants. theres no more grassroots artists out there unless theyre from the south, and most of them are mumble-mouth bamas these days. outside of the south, who else came up grassroots style in recent years? meek millz slipped thru the cracks and that's about it.

Thanks for the explanation dude, I see where you're coming from. One question though, do you consider Run DMC 'grassroots' ? Like all bs aside, do you feel as though their movement was organic?

i wasn't alive. but by all accounts, it certainly was. also, may I point out that their prime was hindered due to contractual disputes with Profile, which caused them to sit on the sideline for a while.

for the record, im not saying that jay & wayne weren't grassroots in their day, and I doubt that DMC was saying that either. but these dudes are beyond washed and their day been over. stuff like this is one of the main reasons that rap is so stagnant now. somebody had to step up and say something and it needed to be somebody like DMC. he just did the rap game a favor. we need more people to step up and speak on it.

I didn't grow up on this bullchit and feel sorry for those that think that the chit going on now is normal.

So I partially agree on the stagnation of hip-hop, the game does go through ebbs and flows, but I don't think it's a veteran's place to be the 'voice', let alone someone who hasn't even dropped material during this era otherwise it sounds contrite, maybe even a little bitter. This is where the youngsters gotta step up and bumrush things, this is how it's always been.

the point is that priority wasn't the type of indie that you were insinuating. jay didn't even have a master p type deal.

it wasn't Koch.
Wacky D, don't quote me again until you get an psychiatric evaluation that proves that you're not retarded.

go somewhere else with the bullchit young bul.

im not into trading insults.

so basically you want a youngster to step up and speak the obvious, only to get blackballed? cuz that's whats ultimately going to happen. hell, niccas cant even get on. these labels now have a system where they create their own stars. theyre not even looking for the true talents that are actually out here buzzing. another big reason why the game is so wack now.

the game is different now. its going to have to be more oldheads with nothing to lose speaking up. and DMC is perfect because he done already had his run so you cant brush him off as bitter or jealous without looking like a complete dikkhead(i.e. some of the posters that tried that in this thread).
