Its more based than you think. Forget how his character JJ was on Goodtimes before you judge how educated this guy really is. He used to do a regular bit for the Black Panther Party. Also, Jay Leno and Letterman wrote jokes for him for his Good Times show. He also lived a straight edge lifestyle which sounded impossible in 1970s America. I've read dozens of autobiographies/memoirs from Ric Flair to Pam Grier to Nike Co-Founder Bill Bowerman and this one of the best I've read. Good read if you wanna know about Black Harlem in the 60s-70s, the show business or how to make it as a black comedian.
