When Jordan retired from the Bulls, Im almost certain that I saw the term used in sports journalism in debates about MJ vs KAJ vs Wilt vs Mr Russell.

Perhaps before he retired.
You didn’t.

You possibly heard someone refer to Jordan as the greatest of all time. You never heard anyone call him the “GOAT” as an acronym back then. (Nor should you hear it now, obviously, since he’s been surpassed by Bron)

Pretty sure LL did make up the acronym, but I always think of this

Was waiting for someone to bring this up. The debate has always been whether LL jacked the term Earl Manigault because he was literally called "The GOAT" And in the movie Rebound, Kareem was asked specifically by the reporter, "who was the greatest" and Kareem said Earl. So that "greatest" moniker was attached to Earl "The GOAT" first. LL flipped it and made it a more mainstream term.

Nah.

LL had a whole article in Vibe where he was explaining what the term meant. Not "the greatest of all-time", but the actual term "GOAT". Nobody was saying that before LL in '99. Flex didn't even know what he meant by it, when he was on his show. Todd had to break it down for him, letter by letter.

He started that sh*t.
Ali did stop it

He meant no one in hip hop was calling themselves the GOAT before him.
Ali set the precedent and others followed him in their respective fields. LL is saying no rappers were calling themselves the GOAT before him

I'm an LL apologist though. I dressed up as LL for halloween when I was kid. One of my parents got it somewhere on VHS me in full gear doing Radio. My Pops probably got it digitized waiting for my 50th birthday to bust it out for the fam.

As far as Hip-Hop goes...
With all due respect to LL, These guys from Philly might disagree?
Their 4 song Demo EP was released in '91.
Maybe they copped it from Ali first?

Nah.

They were a group that lasted 15 minutes and would pop up on WNYU every now and then. Couple of white dudes, and some other weird cats.

They said they had to change their name from "The Scapegoats" to "The Goats", for legal reasons. They just shortened "scapegoats". They got dropped from Ruffhouse because they couldn't afford to keep funding them and the Fugees.
