Hip hop has never seen a guy gracefully retire when he was still relevant. We've never seen the Barry Sanders or Jim Brown hip hop equivalent. LL should've walked away after he was crowned victorious after the Canibus diss. He might've made someone's Goat list if he did.

I feel you but if the desire to make music is still there then:yeshrug:.

Then again there are legends in other genres of music who are past their primes and yet still puttin out music... only thing is they're encouraged to do it and don't get the same kinda disrespect that rappers do.

Hip hop is based on being cool. That's why there are no socially conscious songs on the radio because everything now is about being cool and introspection is wack to folks. I say that to say getting old in hip hop isn't cool therefore it's not celebrated. I realized once Jay-Z couldn't kill autotune with DOA that no one was exempt from being corny with age.

Breh his status is solidified....no denying that

What other 80's rappers made it past the gangsta rap era the flashy pimp era all the way till 50 cent....

Jay is the only contender if he makes it past 2020.....all i'm saying is if he had a number two like Kanye or Drake and a female pop alliance (Beyonce + Rihanna /Nicki) he'd just tap into their fanbases....

Murda Mook? Loaded Lux? Movado?are upcoming talent :smughusky:

No hat...I'll check for it since I actually own a Radio tape passed down to me from my big brother:madiba:

He's a legend, no denying that but he hasn't been relevant since like 2000, which is the last time he went platinum and there was no drought then like there is today. That's a great 16 year run but Jay been going plat from 96 to last year which is 18 years and still running.

Quality (because it's subjective) and conspiracy theories as to why Jay is relevant aside, I don't see how else you can judge an artists relevance if you're music isn't selling much. Hell the only semi-hit he's had in this century is Headsprung, let's not act like LL has been killing shyt since 85. If Melle Mel came out with an album tomorrow are you going to say he's had a 35 year run?

LL has been relevant for 30 years, maybe not musically relevant, but LL as a name is still a huge name in the entertainment world. Comparing him to Melle Mel? That's disingenuous.

It's not a comparison, I was just making a point by using one of the earliest hip hop acts. As far as not being musically relevant, I thought that's what we were talking about? Bringing up his acting career is as irrelevant as bringing up Jays money in a music discussion. If acting was relevant why not bring Ice T or Will Smith into this discussion?

Headsprung and Hush were hits in the US/UK. So his run was till 2005...

85, 95, 05 = 30 years of making hits........Nobody was checking for Kool Moe Dee in the 90s and 00s breh

Wow, where to begin?

Two "hits" in over a decade does not equal relevance.
85 to 05 is 20 years, not 30, but his albums were barely Gold so I wouldn't count past 2000, factually speaking.
What does Kool Moe Dee have to do with anything? Do you know who Melle Mel is?

LL was going Gold in 2006. There isn't a rapper that debuted in the 80s that is going Gold in the mid 2000s. That's relevant. Hell, most of the popular rappers in the 90s weren't going Gold in the mid 2000s. HELL, most "relevant" rappers in the EARLY 2000s weren't going Gold by 2006. You seem to be considering relevant = top of the game. Btw, I hate the term "relevant". Despise it.

LL should take the Flo Rida route and just do singles, i'm sure LL can still crank out a hit with the right producers/marketing
