You're most certainly right. Maybe I'm remembering wrong. I was on a messageboard but it was more catered to "underground hip hop" so there was probably a bias. Also my friends were and i would argue this battle and most of us thought Canibus got him but maybe that was just us.

It was bad for Canibus back then, lol.

They used to do a lot of versions of Battle of the Beats. So they had to do LL vs. Canibus because of the hype. That was the first time I heard the LL record because it didn't have a video like the Canibus joint. People were clowning 'Bis on the phone lines, lol. "Get this guy outta here". Angie used to ask the listeners if they're "pumping it or dumping it'. Everyone was dumping Canibus. HAHA! I remember him speaking in an interview about how he didn't understand the hate, or why LL and the fans weren't showing him respect. Story of his career though.

I like when either Red or Meth talk about it and always say LL was on some sensitive petty ass shyt and looking too deep in to it.

Redman actually said that Canibus made a mistake by going at LL. Exact words, "You kinda can't go at a legend the minute you get in the game". Wyclef said he wasn't with it either, but wanted to support his artist.

And I agree. Most people didn't even know who 'Bis was. He wasn't certified enough to take so many shots at one of the GOAT's. He spent over a year throwing mad lines at LL. That's OD.

How are you defining most people? Cause by the time he went at LL he had a hell of a buzz already. There was a reason he was on 4,3,2,1 in the first place. He was all over hip-hop magazines by that point.

He was on "4,3,2,1" because Violator wanted to manage him and LL was there and told them he would give him a shot. They were going to have the same management. Violator wanted people outside of just the mixtape crowd to know who he was, so LL was trying to help expose him to more listeners. But when he started talking about "borrowing the mic tattoo" and all that weird sh*t, L felt a certain way and that's when the whole thing kicked off.

Canibus didn't start hitting the magazines until the next year. LL was helping him in '97. That's when the album was done. It was '98 when 'Bis started doing his MTV rounds and publications and all that sh*t.

Not true at all. In 97 was when Beasts From the East dropped. Same as his verses on Common's album, Music Makes Me High Remix, The Firm album, as well as a track on that Rhyme & Reason soundtrack. Canibus had crazy buzz going way before dissing LL, that was a large part of why the diss hit so hard because he already had a bunch of eyes on him.

This right here.

Canibus was signed to the same label that LL was. But directly. He inked with Universal directly to get a bigger check, and they spent millions marketing and promoting him, but the music was trash. The LL situation is what got him out there away from the mixtape sh*t. Most people didn't even know who he was, until the LL thing.

That's why he lost the battle. Because it was never about him not making commercial records, dude just couldn't make good records. Even underground MC's thought he was trash and would clown him. Jerry and Wyclef said he was "a weirdo" who thought he knew everything, but didn't know how to make songs. So they stopped f*cking with him right after they got him his deal. Universal threw him mad money again for a second album, and he flopped so badly, they had to drop him. He got gassed off his freestyle run on the mixtapes and thought because labels wanted to sign him, that he was about to be one of the GOAT's. And like Redman said, it's never okay to come in the game off the street and go at a legend. So he did all that and still couldn't make dope sh*t. That's what killed his "career". He was wack. And his so-called fans online have always been wild delusional.
& his beat selection on that 1st album was terrible

He wasn't buzzing off that damn Lost Boyz album. Most people didn't even hear that track. Or The Firm appearance, or any of those. His run on the mixtapes is what got labels interested in him. That's why UMG, Def Jam and Jive and everyone wanted him. He was being thrown on those tracks because of Violator. Not because he was popular. That's how you got developed back then. The streets knew him from the tapes. Nobody cared about those guest appearances until the LL cameo on "4,3,2,1".

When he came to Def Jam to meet about signing, the first thing he was told was "We see what you're doing on the mixtapes". That's what people knew him from. THAT was his calling card in '97. He says the same, all the time. He wasn't getting hot off those lukewarm albums, lol. This isn't like what X was doing back then.

Should've left the whole mic shyt alone from the start. You don't take nothing, you don't borrow nothing, you lucky to be on the record :krs: :krs: :krs:

LL definitely let his ego get the best of him, but at the same time Canibus let his pride get the best of him. I remember listening to that phone call between them, and Bis being like "Yo L, have you heard of the internet? I was on the internet earlier, and everyone was talking about it, nikkas from Wyoming, Wisconsin, Minnesota..." :laff: :laff: :laff: Dude really let a bunch of anonymous people goad him into making a diss :dead:
