I can quote MC Hammer easier than I can somebody like Styles P because he made more memorable songs. That doesn't negate the fact that not only is he in fact a hell of a lyricist, but he's infinitely better than a number of people who have popular records, even ones who may be a step if not several steps ahead of some elementary shyt like Ham.

X isn't a better lyricist G'z. How many times can you rhyme cruddy and bloody? Lol. Thats his 2pac enemy and Hennessy. I love DMX...he can not write or flow like Banks. DMX is a way better artist, it's not close...he's a way better performer...you feel his shyt way way more, not close...on some move the crowd, microphone controller, master of ceremonies shyt, yes, X is the better MC. But this whole issue is based on lyricism, X questioned his pen...that's stupid of him brudda, you know that. He could have questioned almost anything else lol.

Vocabulary is easily the most overrated aspect of "lyricism". It matters, but what you do with the words you use, matters far more. To me, DMX paints a better picture with his words than Banks. I visualize what X is saying, his content is more introspective, he's more witty (not in a punchline way) and a far better storyteller. He's one of the best crime storytellers in rap history, actually. I'm not mad at you having Banks over X lyrically, because Banks is better with syllables and punchlines. Which, if that's how you judge lyricism, you would be correct. That's just not how I do it.

X comp to me as a lyricist is Scarface. Papoose uses way more syllables, punchlines, metaphors, etc than Scarface. He's nowhere near the lyricist Scarface is, imo.

It's really not though. DMX was putting Scoop on blast for doing what a lot of people do. And that's say what they think they should say, instead of what they really feel. If Banks is ranked as highly as Scoop feels, then you should be able to come up with 2 lines he's said in the course of a 20 year career. That's crazy. Don't just start listing people because you know the names people respect and expect you to say. And I think Banks is a good lyricist, really good. But if I was Banks, I'd be mad at Scoop too.

Big L was underground, was X's contemporary and probably the majority of Banks material to judge him on dropped after he stopped selling records. X isn't on datpiff looking through nikkas mixtapes, he has clashed with nikkas like Jay Z on their come up so I wouldn't expect him to know, or care that Banks been dropping music and improving on his craft on the underground for a good minute.

Styles P ain't my favorite rapper, but I would rank him highly as a lyricist and it wouldn't be because I'm wave riding all of a sudden. Same for black thought, that nikka don't spit no jingles, he's rapping on a level that might actually take some degree of study. That's not to say you HAVE to be complex to be a lyricist, I'm just saying...anybody, DMX included saying Banks isn't a lyricist probably never listened or hasn't listened Banks in a long time. Now is he a star? Does he have songs (and thus lines) that you can reference in a split second mid convo? The nikkas that DMX clashed with at the height of his career do.
