Idk what the semantics of that first step is (you use the term "gather") but I've seen nikkas take like 5 steps *cough LeBron* and still no travel call. In a ref's defense the game is so faced pace that it really just seems like a nitpicky call. Traveling is something that has the least enforcement nikkas be walking, switching pivot foots (sometimes called "great footwork"), taking 4+ steps going into the lane...
