I am a first generation American citizen. I put myself through undergrad and after applying to dental school and being accepted to NYU, took on student loans. Upon graduation I was required to complete a 1 year residency at which time the student loan interest began accruing.
I currently owe more than 400k in student loans. My monthly payments are 3500/month, or 50% of my take home income. Because I make more than 115k a year, I am not allowed to deduct any of the 28k in student loan interest I pay each year.

Don't do it unless you're 100% sure you have enough discipline to study hard.
Are you willing to do whatever it takes to pass your courses? Are you willing to read boring material for several hours each day? These are some questions to consider before taking on the debt.
Parents, please do a better job of teaching your high-school aged children about loans, debt, and interest. They seem to think that private loans can be forgiven and that taking out $180,000 for a degree in Transgender Relations and Italian Culinary Craftsmanship is somehow a good idea. I'm all for majoring in what you're passionate in, but just don't take out a quarter of a million dollars to do so. Take baby steps if you have to so that you can pay it off in affordable amounts.
