Real Life Student Debt Stories • Student Debt Crisis

It's pretty simple, I borrowed $50,000 from Citibank, some for undergrad at Harvard and some for Grad school at Cornell. I've been paying on them for 10-15 years, for the past 4 years my payments have been $642 a month (my mom has been helping me with the payments) and, on a loan with a 10 year payoff I've paid about $45,000 and I still owe, today, $42,000. How can I get out of this? It will never be paid off, I can't see how I can pay this off. I am in my 40s now, I have one small child, and can't find a job (I've applied for nearly 100 since I lost my last job), my husband owns his own business which is suffering. I feel really trapped and I feel like, even if I file bankruptcy, which is a real possibility, I don't think I can manage this loan. By the way, I have a giant federal loan balance, but I at least know I can work that out with the recent laws. So, that's my story.

Debt enslavement is a real problem that affects God knows how many people today.

If there isn't serious, stringent legislation passed to curtail banks' autonomy to structure rates and repayment plans, we're looking at a perverse financial future.

Well I think that's something that's needed for those who are currently in this predicament, but I think that it's just a matter of the incoming class of college students just doing their homework on the reality of the situation.

There are so many options available today that weren't even a thought 15 years ago that there really isn't an excuse not to have minimal college debt. I know I wouldn't wait on some sweeping legislation to address college debt reform, I'd actually buckle down and go with another plan.

It's basically the millennial equivalent of/prelude to a mortgage at this point, I know relatively few people (myself included) who manage to pay all of it, esp without major parental help. It's def a major reason why grad school is looking more  to me everyday.

If the person in that example can't tap into that Harvard/Cornell/Ivy League network of connections....then that's the start of her problems.

At my college (and I'm sure this is true with Ivys) you can always go back to their employment office for jobs, plus they always allow you to connect with specific recruiters and attend job fairs.

I'm in shytty limbo because I can't find anything in my field while at the same time being pressured to go to grad school. I might go anyway
