So much of Thriller is fueled by retaliation to the overt anti-Black racism of the music industry at the time.

This is 100% correct. Mike had been dropping hits but until Thriller showed up it was the game changer that made MTV HAVE to carry black artists or Mike threatened to boycott them. He became the King of Pop when Thriller dropped and paved the way for other Black Artists to get their due on MTV and other airwaves. One of the bigger reasons Rick James fell off is because he was upset white stations/MTV weren’t showcasing him even though his music (and to an extent his videos) were doing serious numbers.
