"In the 80s, the source, and chosen format for the short film was 35mm film. The quality of 35mm is very high (4K-6K, in terms of resolving power). In the process of taking the finished film and transferring it to NTSC video for broadcast, a great amount of quality was lost in the process—back then, and until only recently (2006, when Blu-rays were made available to consumers) or so, this was the best quality outside of watching a 35mm film print.
Now, we are able to scan that original, 35mm film negative (the film which ran through the camera) and scan it at 4K or 6K. So, no, the low definition is not a result of time degradation. Luckily, the 35mm negative seemed to be well preserved."
