what's crazy is that this was off the dome......

One of the biggest records of Erykah Badu’s epic, non-conformist career was concocted off the top of her head-wrapped head.

The scrub-bashing “Tyrone” was originally performed and conceptualized live in London, going on to become one of her most memorable songs.

Ms. Badu sat down with The Breakfast Club on Tuesday (Nov. 24) and reminisced about how her timeless hit came about.

“In rehearsal a lot of times we’d just play around and do stuff like “call me!” but I didn’t know it was going to turn into ‘Tyrone.’ So the background vocalists were prepared because they kind of know the joke. But it just kind of turned into a song that was totally freestyled.”

The banter about Badu’s nameless leech not only forever embarrassed anyone wielding the name “Tyrone”—it also went on to become a No. 1 record on the Billboard Hot R&B Chart thanks to some sassy, improv quips.

Now every time I ask you for a little cash

You say naw, but turn right around and ask me for some ass

Oh, whoa well hold up, listen partner I ain’t no cheap thrill

Cause Miss Badu is always comin’ for real and you know the deal, nikka!

“Tyrone” has become an everlasting meme in rap and pop culture (Andre 3000 once took to the booth to deny the song is about him). Erykah has revived the song’s closing line by using it as the title of her new mixtape, But You Caint Use My Phone. Meanwhile, most freestyles end up as fodder for Gangsta Grillz mixtapes.

Has any other freestyle had the massive impact of “Tyrone?” Could you imagine a rapper completely improvising a song on the spot that goes on to have the same influence?

ain't no other freestyle make a mark on the culture like this

So why didn't he always say no when she asked him for a little cash?:jbhmm:

Other Side of the Game was about him being in the drug game with a baby on the way. Tyrone was after he left that life and tried to get on his feet, shyt just didn't go as planned. She held him down for 2-3 years (how long was it btw each song?) before checking out. I guess I'll see you Next Lifetime my nikka :jawalrus:

I was going to say Tyrone was improvised, that’s why she’s one of greatest. Even if you disagree with the content, breh’s can’t even hate on that. We heard it and we said , touché!
