The drone program is obviosuly a terrible mistake, I never said otherwise. And no one can possibly defend it. But this mofo Bush INVADED a country on false pretenses, lead to the deaths of HUNREDS OF THOUSANDS of civilains and wasted TRILLIONS of dollars that could have been put to use to actually benefit people. Iraq is in a WORSE state today.
Obama defends the drone program. Under his admin, drone strikes have increased dramatically. Should he be a war criminal as well?
Not sure if you heard about Iraq before we invaded it, but Saddam wasn't a nice guy. He gassed the Kurds and invaded the Kuwaitis. He trolled America for literally decades. A Democratic Bill Clinton dropped bombs on Saddam but didn't invade for fear of backlash. Assuming he had chemical weapons/wmd was a very logical assumption given his history, especially given that Saddam told Bill that he did in fact have them. shyt, the NY Times reported a few months ago that they DID find chemical weapons and a lot of soldiers were exposed and weren't provided medical assistance because of the secrecy. Now, these weren't the same weapons that Bush brought up, but how far off base was he, really?
Civilian deaths are always a tragedy....but its a war. More died in the Iran/Iraq conflict. Iraq is in a worse state -
right now. Those are the key words. Once the consolidation finishes, it will be in a better place to actually decide what the state future is. That opportunity could never happen under Saddam. I feel people forget just how brutal of a dictator he was. Iraq was a shyt show well before we got there, we just opened the flood gates and expedited the process. Theres no denying the war was largely for oil and those trillions spent will reap rewards directly and indirectly for decades to come. Gaining access to those oil fields was a gold mine for US companies and the largest consumers of oil in the world. The defense industries also reaped huge rewards. You may not like where the money ended up, but those trillions were an investment and they are gonna produce benefits for decades.
I'll leave you with this quote from Bill Clinton, who laid the groundwork for the invasion of Iraq.
Now, let’s imagine the future. What if he fails to comply, and we fail to act, or we take some ambiguous third route which gives him yet more opportunities to develop this program of weapons of mass destruction and continue to press for the release of the sanctions and continue to ignore the solemn commitments that he made? Well, he will conclude that the international community has lost its will. He will then conclude that he can go right on and do more to rebuild an arsenal of devastating destruction. And some day, some way, I guarantee you, he’ll use the arsenal. And I think every one of you who’s really worked on this for any length of time believes that, too
