Yea my FIL was an ATC for a few years.... he is a bit off, wound up tight like a French braid. Taken him decades to even begin to unpack all that shyt..

You have to use binoculars to identify aircraft..aircraft have different weight and the arresting gear has to be set accordingly.

There are small visual differences between a FA18 Rhino and a Hornet...if you miss it all hell breaks loose.
