J crew ludlow otr for my workhorse daily wear. Cost not too much, come as separates, decent fit OTR.
I'm not certain it works that way with suits, it kinda depends on where you live, and what you're looking for.
The first one I ever bought was pretty much off the rack from the only place that had suits close to me. It was fine, but just fine for a kid fresh out of school.
The last few I got from an actual tailor, and they took my measurements, and took time and curated them to my preferences and style, as well as matching up shirts, ties, and shoes, even threw in some belts. If you can find a place like that, I would recommend going there.
As far as a 3-piece, I'm kind of meh on them. I have one, but I've only worn the vest maybe twice. Unless you have an occasion that you need to be extra fancy for, it's kind of overkill.

To answer your question @Neuromancer I used to go to Burlington. They have suits for some good deals.
I want to own more suits for more than just funerals. I also like the way I look in suits. I've been working from home for 4 years and I have bulked up since going into MMA so I haven't really had to buy anything. Check the prices, the one I went to was a great deal, and quality. But if you just get some off the rack, I'd say maybe get them a bit bigger, then take them to the tailor and have them fitted to you.
