All I can say is that both Beyoncé did a surprise album and was her best first week ever. Taylor Swift dominating with them too. Drake is on that level.

Didn't Kendrick announce his return via a MJ style letter from his reps 3 weeks before the album dropped. I'd say that is a fair bit of promo.

The fact is this album was not well received so ppl who would normally listen may not have based off social media reactions.
