In an unusual secret court proceeding, Lorenzo (Fat Cat) Nichols, once described as the dominant power in heroin and cocaine distribution in southeastern Queens, has pleaded guilty to two Federal racketeering-related murder charges, law-enforcement authorities said, adding that Mr. Nichols is cooperating with investigators.

Among the drug figures Mr. Nichols is said to be providing information about is his former top lieutenant, Howard (Pappy) Mason, who was indicted Aug. 23 on Federal racketeering and conspiracy charges. That indictment includes a charge that Mr. Mason, who went on to head his own drug organization, ordered the 1988 murder of Police Officer Edward Byrne. Officer Byrne was shot in the head as he sat alone in in a patrol car on a street in South Jamaica, Queens, guarding a witness in a drug case.

''You might say that the Fat Cat has turned into a canary,'' one official said.

Another official said that Mr. Nichols was providing information about former associates in his drug ring as well as those in other organizations. He said that Mr. Nichols had indicated he would testify against Mr. Mason and others.

The authorities, who did not want to be identified, said that Mr. Nichols, was hoping that his cooperation might lead the Federal judge who accepted the guilty plea to give him a shorter prison term than the life sentences without possibility of parole carried by the homicide counts specified in the racketeering charge.
