In defense of Banner.. bro was a pretty educated dude. He went to Southern and was in grad school at UMES before going all-in on music.
Around that time, he was clearly trying to figure out how to balance message and mainstream. Cadillacs on 22s actually was the first single, and it had a whole different vibe. But then Like a Pimp dropped, and that obviously became the bigger hit. Probably label-driven, because that’s how the game worked back then.
Even in the Like a Pimp video though, you see stuff like burning crosses and him running like the Klan is chasing him. I think he was trying to find his voice as an artist and felt label pressure to make some shyt that wasn’t really where he was at mentally/spiritually. Even that line, “I still love my queens, but nikkas hipped me to the game,” shows he was trying to keep one foot in the message, even on a radio track.
Flip def had the better verse. But I feel like that song was more in his lane and Banner was tryna find himself, so naturally his verse(s) on a song like that ain’t gonna land the same
