Punchlines are a form of wordplay, you're making a "punchline" out to be exclusively comedy shyt.

Somebody quoted ab soul bars a while ago. His wordplay are mainly puns which are punchlines imo.

“Word play” as it relates to rhyming is not the same as a “punchline”


You can include some word play to help deliver a punchline of course but you do not need to utilize word play to execute a punch line in itself ...they are not the same or a “form” of one another

Kendrick is a great song writer but not an elite lyricist.. Nothing wrong with that..

He doesn't do metaphors nor does he give you those wisdom bars of say a Styles, Scarface or Sigel..

No. I was referring to several posters posting several full Kendrick verses. Not just hooks and catchy lil lines. And again, a Lupe Stan in here already admitted they hear people quoting Kendrick all the time.

Yall wild emotional about this goddamn. I still have listened to Tetsuo and Youth a ton and Drogas Light not that much, but I ain't talkin about the music. You can still kill verses and make great music. I'm not even knocking Kendrick smfh. You can be the best rapper and not be the super duper-est lyricist. No one's saying Kendrick should change shyt and mess with what he's got. He's poetic in a different way. Again we talkin about Lupe saying he isn't a top tier lyricist to HIM. Maybe saying he doesn't do metaphors is strong.. It's not his strength and when I do hear them they're nothing special..

Jay doesn't really use punchlines.. A punchline stands out.. Jays cleverness is in that his lines don't really standout in his verses.. They don't break the topic for the most part and you just catch them later..

No. Just because you've used punchlines before does not make you a punchline rapper. That's not what he's mainly known for. Punchline rappers are rappers who prominently showcase punchlines in most of their raps.

He doesn’t have to be “known for” xyz I’m simply talking about what he actually is capable of doing with high end proficiency .... Jay I would say isn’t “known” for any one thing in particular ...as far as rhyming ..he does it all

It would be kind of like saying Prince is known for singing without acknowledging his proficiencies in song writing / instrumentation / performing multi versed guys like that are known for being the total package who can do it all in their professions this is why they are regarded as legendary
