Lupe is an incredibly gifted lyricist. I don't see him as a battle rapper though. I remember there was a discussion on who would win a battle: Black Thought or Lupe. Lupe is a master at wordplay and extended metaphors, but he lacks the energy and presence to beat a Black Thought or even Eminem in a battle even though I would probably be more prone to say Lupe is a better songwriter and overall lyricist.
