Probably the most insightful discussion twitter has ever seen. Both have very valid points but I take Talibs side.

Hip-hop in its most natural and bare state is the expression of the urban youth. That comes with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Change the environment you change the mentality. Violence is part of our life and imbedded in our psyche, that can not be changed.

Honestly Lupe annoyed the fukk outta me during this back n forth...it came off extremely judgemental and More along the lines of finger pointing and Talib came from a more open minded..thought out viewpoint without selling this culture we call hip hop out...Talib is right...we need balance...there is no Yin without Yang and vice versa...to simply condemn these people without knowing them personally or their situation or intent is EXTREMELY counter productive...dude has gained this holier than thou attitude and I dont fukk wit those kind of people whether I agree with points they make or not...erase rap..these issues are still gonna be here...we need better HOMES...and better PARENTING...I'd be damned if I blamed the media for my children's shortcomings...that takes the fact that I have responsibility as a parent out of the equation...oh yea..and that Beethoven comment was some smug shyt...im pretty sure theres some serial killers that bump Beethoven heavy...who the fukk cares?..

Talib bodied this nikka and he did it for hiphop:salute:.....meanwhile Lupe bringing up how "the state" views raps lyrics as evidence to use against them,as if becuz the state is ignorant enuff to not understand it we all supposed to be:wtb:....u should kno better than the state lupe.

U absolutley can't hold rappers responsible for there lyrics as far as ruining the community....there a soundtrack for shyt nikkas is really goin through or its simply entertainment....I think Pac said it best when he said he couldn't worry about censoring himself,u may influence sum people who want to live out life like the way rappers talk about it,just like movies can do that....that's not a large demographic of people tho who will base LIFE decisions off what rappers is sayin....for the few that do its just a fad for them and as soon as shyt get too real:whoo: they will fall the fuk back and get they life together.....hopefully they'll start gradually so they first reality check ain't losin they life or gettin 15 yrs in jail.

The people who really go through it will simply look at it as music they relate too which is the soundtrack of they life and continue doin knucklehead shyt they wuz already doin.....and will have to change on they own terms, not becuz of sum positive Jeezy records or Rick Ross Lupe collaberations....I like balance on albums simply cuz I think it makes ur album more diverse and better, not bcuz I think it will change the world.

Now if u wanna start holding rappers ACCOUNTABLE for the lack of shyt they do in they own communities as far as offering incentive, offering they time, money, connections to help kids and help folks that's down that's another story Lupe, they get they money out the streets, got hot from the streets, claim to love the hood u should I believe offer your time as you know you are influential when u can but that's out of the goodness of ur own heart, hard to imagine nikkas could NOT want to do that more and I'm not talkin all the time.....if they don't that community has a right to call those rappers out and hold up the ones that do....even if they bout they bottom line money wise bad press will send them to action.....talib said it best rappers are about they pockets, organize to hurt they pockets, get at these nikkas thru the media if u that serious....lUpe soundin like Malcolm but let's see who name he start callin out and who's neck he gon put his foot on...and what actions he will take.

Either way props to them for puttin it out there like that, this should be stickied

Basically lol,the beethoven comment didn't even make sense....so what u listened to beethoven before spice 1,right after that he talked about all the things his father taught him which basically proved talibs point....don't matter what fukin order u listened to Spice 1 and Beethoven in lil nikka:russ:...neither spice or beethoven raised u,u had a pops who did that.

Talib aslo made the point about givin passes to folks u think or skilled....how u gon take this stance and say "maybe not in the nwa days so much"....oh why not?cuz u liked NWA and Spice 1:pachaha:...as one of the most murderous gangsta nikkas ever on wax if u don't believe Spice 1 wuz raisin murder rates,I don't wanna hear shyt from u about how u think this new watered down shyt got nikkas dyin left and right

Yea I think Lupe made a good point there, but I don't think he acknowledges how lucky he is. When a kid grows up in a broken home and they hear gangsta music, they're just gonna imitate what other kids are doing. While Lupe's dad was there to separate the BS from the real, many kids don't have that.

This.

Check this out article about Single Parent Households vs 2 Parent Households in the African American Community:

Breakdown of the Black Family, and Its Consequences - Discover the Networks

This is why I lean HEAVILY on the idea that 2 Parent Households > Single Parent Households.

Bottomline for me though is that violence in the black community was here before rap and video games. Poverty, Drugs, and lack of good parents (whether 1 or 2 in the house) are the REAL major causes of inner city demise imo.

If people raised their kids better, things would be better:manny:

I wouldn't just totally conclude that 2 parent household is better. Our society chooses to make this a problem because it chooses to punish these individuals(the american way), knowing that this is a problem and choosing to do nothing when these kids our young. Often times in the name of politics or religion. That's not simplifying. This is a complex problem, but there are societal solutions that we'd rather not face. I'm just saying, why are there 19 year old women with 5 or 6 kids and no dad around? Obvious reasons that need to be dealt with, but we ignore because it costs too much socially.

Damn, I think Kweli is a corny fukk but I agree with both sides...
I think the prollems in the community started before negative raps, as a matter of fact thats not a debatable point. But I also see this shyt as contributing to the further degradation of our communities because a lot of times there is either poor or absent parenting and these dumb ass niccaz do whatever they see or hear other niccaz talkin about... as jackeurobinson's thread about father figures in hip hop suggested.

If one sees negative music as a contributing factor to our problems then it is bytchmade to not confront it in a straight forward manner and p*ssyfootin around it as Talib suggests we do doesnt help anything. And I think there is a difference between then and now. Now this destructive lifestyle is being glorified with zero acknowledgment to the consequences where I feel it was much more balanced in the past.

I mean look at Scarface, the nicca aint rappin about being some saint, but the nicca gives you both sides of the coin... now listen to Ross, or Woodface, its just glorifying negativity. And positive shyt cant find its way onto the radio anymore. Definitely seems like a sinister plan to destroy niccaz and have us Big Meeching to our graves.

But go ahead niccaz, and talk about a niccaz dreads some more, because thats really the important thing here. :childplease:

They're both corny.

Lupe's just a damn basket-case.

For all of Kweli's "righteous" talk, dude spoke on how he'd smack his chick up if she violated him at the club, and she was AT the station while he was speakin'. LOL! He was callin' Hot 97 callers "bytches" on-air at one point because they dissed his music. Dude's been phony for years. Most of the "positive" rappers are.

I typed a long response and it wasn't loaded.:beli:

But to sum up the point I want to make in regards to the debate, I agree with both sides, but if I didn't have respect for hip hop as a genre, I'll be siding with Lupe 100%.

It would be possible for a child to grow up on Gucci Mane and still be a productive member of society. It would be possible for a child to grow up in a warzone and still be a responsible adult. It would be possible for a child to survive a famine....

So what if child A can overcome neglect and abuse? Does that now mean that we feed our kids junk on purpose justnto see if they can survive it? No one is saying ban gangsta rap. Just cut the bullshyt and admit that it's the musical equivalent of unhealthy eating.

So how do you handle pork chops? If you are smart you eat them a couple times a week and try to eat a couple salads in there somewhere too. If you are like most Americans you eat them two or three times a day. Eventually your health suffers. Same with our communities.

Hip Hop is not better or worse than pop TV, movies, video games, etc., but that doesn't make it good for you. Smokers admit that cigs are bad, but they smoke anyway. Hip Hop's number one tenet "keep it real".

Be honest with yourself. Bullshyt everyone else except yourself.

They both make good points and they both typed some random nonsense..

It seems like Talib is still regurgitating that old '80 mantra that rap is "CNN for the hood" and rappers only speak on what they see...

We all know that is no longer true...

On the other hand Lupe sounded dumb bringring up that he listened to Beethoven before Spice 1...It had nothing to do with the overall point and was just a way for him to flex his elitist mentality...

Young people aren't gonna listen to either one of these n1ggas though because through all their good intentions they both come off as corny...
