He can try to be overly complex and it comes off as pretentious and try hard. He does what battle rappers get accused of doing and that's trying to be super nerdy metaphorical on songs rather than just making sure the lines connect with the audience. There's a balance. I think Ras Kass at his peak did it perfectly.

He's monotone too.

With that said, I like quite a bit of his music. He's also an attention seeking fukk boy as well. That doesn't help.

he's good at crafting. not good at making you feel stuff. a lot of it is the voice/delivery but it also has to do with the way he writes. more complex doesn't always = better. feeling the lyrics/music trumps everything but that's achieved through a combination of all the elements of mcing. As "simple" as some of the other rapper's lyrics are, the one skill they have that Lupe lacks (at least in my opinion) is that they can put me in a mindstate just by how they put words together and said them (pause). lyrics that actually stay in your mind for days not just cause it's catchy.

I have never been a fan of wordy lyrical miracle rappers and Lupe is the epitome of that. I have never understood the hype

He doesn't lack anything. Dude is a tier 0 rapper. He's one of the best. He's not looking for mass appeal.

He doesn't try to bring overly complex he is who he is. Half you dudes don't even listen to him. People fear and demean what they can't understand. Dude has one of the best flows in the game and constantly switches it up. If you listened to him you will know this. His voice? It's subjective. No rapper has a perfect voice.

He has the ability ability to tell different stories with 1 verse. If you know better you'll do better. He studies and I'd constantly growing and it shows in its music and because you don't care about the ills of the pharmaceutical business(animal pharm) great african leaders (hail Selassie) the plight of the hood(deliver) the complex relationship of a woman trying to make it by relating it to jesus and Mary(madonna) doesn't mean others aren't.
