Everybody pirates though, not just rap fans...

..just look at the shytload of seeders and lurkers for any big pop artist...as a matter of fact, it's harder to find a healthy torrent for a rapper's discography than it is for say Pop or Rock and Roll.

Bullshyt. Let the coli tell it, white people don't know how to download illegally :beli:

I get what you're saying about Murs, but I wasn't speaking on a specific person, I was responding to the blanket statement "black underground rappers" and Macklemore can't be compared because it's such a wide ranging group of artists. I compare Mack to Nelly, Luda or Drake simply because most underground rappers that don't make it mainstream stay underground for a reason, because they don't wanna be a Nelly, Luda or Drake and that's their choice but this dude made that type of album, PLUS he's white, wasn't hard to predict the outcome.

All I was saying is that why Mac Miller has more buzz and sells more records than Curren$y is a much better discussion.

Because Curren$y caters to the most ungrateful fukks a fanbase could ever know.

from what i've heard he was pretty much unknown outside of Seattle. supposedly he's been "grindin" for the last 10 years but there wasn't much actual music being made from what wikipedia says. before Thrift Shop i wouldn't say he had any more of a following than any other underground rapper that would suggest he was gonna blow up.

That's a lie dude was on the xxl freshman cover before thrift shop was made. That nikka had songs and a good lil following. I heard a song he had a good while back called wings about originality and nikkas rocking Jordan's and shyt, YouTube video had millions of views back then. This was way before thrift shop.

Yeah, I bet Atmosphere is somewhere scratching their heads. Macklemore was basically Slug's son for years.

:pachaha: i still aint heard nothing dude ever made on the radio

We live in the same city and I hear it all the time. Try 95.5 or 98.7, bruh.

Murs kissed another man on the lips and nobody gave a fukk but if Macklemore did it, it would probably be national news

...maybe if Murs did it in a vid for a catchy sing-along pop tune with fun lyrics, then hey...

Exactly. I'm seeing a lot of sweeping generalizations in here. People with hard-formed opinions and statements about shyt they know nothing about. Between Macklemore coming out of nowhere and Eminem never addressing white privilege, it's getting ridiculous in this thread. It's okay to say "I don't know."

...also, with the whole "He looks safe, which is why he popped off and Yelawolf didn't", how quickly we tend to forget...

...safest white rapper ever in recent years. Had an anthem AND a pop club single with Cee-lo. White privilege didn't exactly keep him afloat for too long after that. This album came out almost 4 years ago. Sometimes, it's just about timing, intriguing concepts, and being able to craft the music that'll appeal to people that'll actually buy music. Macklemore is distinct and clever enough when crafting these songs...even they aren't the dopest.

Anyhow, once this discussion finishes up, I'd love to see a thread about "Southern privilege" in hip-hop since everyone's looking for something to complain about.

The point of the line isnt that he would have sold 5 million instead 10 million.. the point is that he woulda sold less if he was black.

YOu really think he was sitting there coming up with the line thinking i would have sold as much as DMX and hov if i was black?

:rudy:

I was thinking the same thing reading that, if he was black he wouldn't even be known

that's exactly what jumps out in that line.

Eminem knew exactly what he was doing with that chit.

True, but Kendrick would probably not move a million if he was white.

In rap, I feel certain white people have a privilege (him and Eminem) other are overlooked.
Some black people are privileged (you can't talk street shyt and be a white rapper, but even the softest of black rappers can talk street shyt and get away with) and other not.

who are these soft black rappers that you speak of that didn't get called out, ostracized & ridiculed?

and on the flipside, white rappers can do songs that black rappers cant. and the stuff that they are allowed to do, tends to generate white money. honestly, I don't even know why macklemore is even in this conversation. most black people don't even know who dude is, unless they venture off into white entertainment.

hell, black singers cant even do soul music these days and expect to be pushed.......but white singers can.

Also, it goes without saying that Macklemore is one of the realest "indie" backpackers ever.
Dude is real about getting money, doing deals with major labels, politics, gays and whatnot. No agenda, not acting like anything etc.
I've seen both of his interviews on the breakfast club. He's an aight rapper, even though I don't really fukk with his latest album I probably could see myself fukking with him if he tweaked his sound a bit.

Yep, it's not black and white. We only look for white privilege, cause it exists in important things like freedom, jobs, education etc.

lol @ the gays comment. dude has the gay anthem all over white radio now.

and theres definitely money behind him in some form.

Being white helps but lets be real its more than that. With 2 albums Mac miller failed to go gold, yelawolf did under 150k, mgk did under 200k. Rittz and acction bronson dont move shyt...
