In any case it takes 30 days to ship from China to LA, so we'll start seeing the consumer effects on May 10th. 15 days after that supply chain issues will roll to the Midwest (30 ship days + 2 truck weeks to get to texas). If something does miraculously get worked out we won't see the benefits until 30-45 days after an agreement (and that's generous). In the meantime China is replacing u.s. imports with imports from other countries (in Brazil is now shipping more soy to China to replace the previous u.s. exports).

My sister was talking to this older Italian guy at her job.

He was basically spouting off the usual MAGA talking points and claiming that immigrants are bad for the country, Liberal laws increase crime, and Democrats are Communists and blah blah.

So, my sister showed him all sorts of receipts about Trump that objectively showed him to not be good for the country economically or otherwise and that Democrats aren't even close to Communist but he was way too adamant in his beliefs. Even when she got him to agree with her on certain things, he still reached the same conclusion at the end.

It's not about predicting the future, it's about understanding how we got here and why doubling down on failed policies won't fix anything. One of the first things Trump did when he took office in 2017 was to severely weaken the fiduciary rule that protected retirement savings from being ripped off by Wall Street firms. His administration also pushed that deregulation scheme disguised as a retirement plan (ARPs) for small businesses, which offered zero oversight or protections against mismanagement by financial firms looking to exploit workers savings for profit.

He let private equity firms get their hands on 401(k)s. He passed massive corporate tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy and corporations at the expense of workers. He gutted the CFPB, which weakened oversight of predatory financial practices. And he restricted retirement plan managers from considering long-term investment risks.

Trump isn't offering change. He's doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result. How exactly do any of these actions help ordinary workers trying to save for retirement? How does any of this fix a broken system instead of making it worse?
