If we ignore Ghosn's legal fckery for a moment , him shifting their automotive business culture away from hybrids towards electric cars would have protected them from BYD encroachment. Japan needs tens of thousands more of Ghosn(s) to change their bussiness culture if they wanna compete .

All dead on but especially this part, their culture is probably the worst when it comes to standing out and fostering innovation. Theirs only so much you can refine before others copy your techniques and right now Japan has no moat. Nothing that keeps them from standing out or being a major player in a vertical or industry anymore. They are niche country getting by on anime and tourism.
