Man I swear there was a conversation at work yesterday about this very subject.

A co-worker brought up that one of her neighbors children had won a million dollars in some type of lottery. My boss and other co-workers we like, "ahhhhhh, well a million dollars doesn't go nearly as far as you think it does". "It's 'only' $600k after taxes anyway. They talking like they had 600k to begin with.

These are the same people that complain about not having shyt all day long. Some of these folks have 2nd jobs at department stores to support a lifestyle that they can't afford. And these are people who work in the financial sector...they should know better. We all GS-13s, 14s and 15s in my office. And they act like they don't have any financial knowledge at all.

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that folks in the DMV don't really have money like that...and they don't. Man people around here are faking hard. Talking about "I got standards". Brand new BMWs; 5 bedroom homes; they won't live in certain areas because it's not considered upscale; they always have to have the 'best' stuff.

People have no self-discipline at all.

I live in DC, work for the government and see this shyt every day. You got cats that make that kind of money but have horrible financial discipline. Of course folks are gonna be broke when you're paying $3500 for rent, having a $700 car note and dealing with a high college debt load.

What trips me out about broke folks in my agency is that we can telework from anywhere in the US but folks dont move to cheaper spots to save money. I'm gonna be moving south in a few years to get out of DC.

I know several white women who rent a room in DC but live in the Southern Virginia, hell I know one that owns a home in Atlanta but takes a flight to DC Monday morning

You're not required to live in the home you purchased breh, just required to pay for it.
Upkeep of property values quite literally keeps up the funding for the nearby public schools, one of the main reasons why Black kids in urban school districts seated in poorer areas suffer when it comes to education.
No one has said college is a requirement, but it is a necessity. You can't a lot of professions with deficiencies in AAs are college-required, think about engineering, the bedrock of building, nation and otherwise. One of Haiti's biggest issues? A deficiency of civil, structural, and electrical engineers to properly build and maintain their infrastructure. Goes for nearly every other developing country, and a lot of poorer cities/suburbs. East Cleveland's city engineer doesn't do nearly enough, which is another of the nearly all-Black city's issues.
Home ownership is a necessity for a strong community.

No offense but kid, you are still in college. You just don't understand the dynamics at stake from a day to day level. You might see the numbers, might even understand it but without the day to day, your numbers are meaningless. No one wants to take an L. No one. Until you see it from a different lens, you might as well be another out of touch cac.

This! There are tons of whites who live above their means and/or have to deal with unplanned circumstances that's beyond our control.

Also, YES the system is designed for us to fail. Understanding that and resisting peer pressure to keep up the front and constantly go out to events that involve spending money and being super disciplined with our spending can offset that a bit unless we have expensive unplanned circumstances like health/dental bills, car motor blowing up/expensive car maintenance, etc.

Its like we have to live in old cheap matchbox apartments, not have cable, internet, only flip phones, not go out to eat, shop at cheap grocery stores and buy cheap food like ramen noodles, frozen chicken, frozen and canned veggies, etc., not travel and take vacays, and definitely not have any expensive habits like drinking, smoking, gambling, substances, shopping, etc. To save maximum money...u have to live like a hermit unless u had a wife who worked and make good money as well.

nikkas who are in school will never understand. People get into debt for numerous reasons. Many start in debt. Some even avoid debt by selling their ass like @cam>. Y'all gotta realize that it is real out here. Most people making 6 in DC started making like 30-40k and in between jobs, housing, with other expenses on the side. It's costly out chea.

Here's my contribution:

I have a good friend who lives in NYC. Gross is 150K (including bonus potential).

After all taxes and deductions she nets 90K a year. She pays $3000/monthly for rent.

She says that she does well, and definitely doesn't seem to live above her means. She said, "If I wanna buy something, I can. But a lot of times, I don't."

She has her CPA, but doesn't actually do work that directly ties into that cert. (EDIT: VP, Internal Audit )

My brother lives in Houston, and I believe he pulls 60K gross. I believe his rent is $1100. He seems to be doing okay @ USPS.

Just this morning at work I’m in the breakfast line a couple people behind my boss, he gets up to the cash register and his card declines for some links, eggs and a juice…I’m standing there like da fuk..he told the lunch lady to try again and she did, shyt declined again ..the lady behind him hands him some cash, not sure how much she gave him but he pays and then he walks off with this embarrassed look..about a half hour later I went to his office to chop it up and I asked him what was wrong wit the lunch ladys card reader and he just flat out said “Nothing..that was all me, 2 ex-wives and a mortgage leaves the tank empty”…I changed the subject after that but it got me thinking..damn yo..we gotta learn how to manage our money better than this, that’s unacceptable..stop living above your means brehs..whats the point in having a 5 bedroom house if you cant buy hot links and eggs, brehs.

So because you had a bad experience you give up on something? Who sounds like a novice? All women manipulate that is your fault if you fell for the okie doke! The woman I lived is now my wife. We will celebrate 10 years of marriage this year. Also we lived together for a very long time. She knew about my BS and I knew about hers. I stated 2 years in my post because the only people that can hide for that long are sociopaths. You will make the decision on whether you want to deal with her baggage or not. Better for you to know before you put a ring on it.

I you might want to reevaluate that stance but hey man do you. Maybe you should do a better job of vetting the women you deal with. The gentleman that the OP discussed may have vetted his women maybe not. Maybe he was on some BS and they did not want to deal with that.
