Home ice in hockey actually has a major advantage unlike some other sports. Other sports, home field is great as you have the crowd getting into it, but hockey actually has a tactical advantage for the home team. The AWAY team in hockey has to send their line out FIRST after any stoppage. That means the home team is allowed to match up their lines no matter how they want.
If the Penguins put out Crosby and Malkin together if there was a game in Washington, then the Capitals could put out a defensive line to match-up. If the Penguins put those two players out, and the Capitals put their top offensive line out, the Penguins can't just have their guys skate off at a stoppage and change. It is definitely a major advantage.
That is why I like taking the away teams that are not favored in a series, or I'll take a team that is down 2-0 in a series heading back home as they can tie that series back up with home ice, and then they have momentum going into game five.
