He could have just wanted to escape from the child acting bubble and live a normal life instead. Dealing with those stresses at such a young age, it’s not for everybody. Kaczmarek last mentioned that he was finishing up graduate work at a prestigious university.

Not really. A big part of the show is despite their intelligence and niceties, Malcolm and his family are pros at self sabotage
