Correct.
The common tactic we can see in the last ten years is that mixed-race politicians who claim Black international/ or African heritage are "not really Black" -- so as to dissuade Black Americans from supporting them.
See Obama, Harris, Mamdani.
Clockwork. Nasty work.

They pulled that on Obama too, or tried too.

Also, the ADOS / FBA movement did a lot of damage by playing into this ugly Black identity war / anti-immgrant nonsense.
But I see a lot of them are quiet since the election. Hm.

Senior NYT editors too, like Jonathan Weisman's obvious bias and racist history:

Obama's Kenyan father, and his middle name being Hussein brought accusations of being an "anti-colonialist" and a "secret Muslim."
There are direct ties between normalized anti-Blackness, Africaness being disqualifying and suspicious --and normalized Islamophobia -- as we see with Mamdani.

My dad, who was deeply racist, was so distraught by his attraction to Whitney Houston that he would walk around the house mumbling to himself over and over, “She ain’t all black, not a chance, can’t be…”

filmalicia.bsky.social
That made me laugh, even though it couldn’t have been very funny for you to deal with your father’s racism.

It was kind of funny at first, then concerning, then deeply disturbing. He was a late-stage alcoholic, so he would say odd things, but this was something his deeply imbedded racism simply couldn’t process. As if he was trying to convince himself he was only attracted to the not-Black part of her.

I’m sorry. That is sad, especially when it is someone that you care about. My mom, who was a lifelong liberal Democrat who died in 2018, got sucked in by Lou Dobbs’s anti-immigrant crap for a while.
Fortunately she never went full Fox News or full Trump.

As always it seems like conservative White people are about 1000x more invested in curating who qualifies as “Black” than Black people themselves.

kenlinc.bsky.social
For me this is such an odd phenomenon from a matter of political strategy for a 13% minority of mostly “mixed” because of slavery would want to alienate and reduce blackness. Also given that much of the “biracial” vs the one-drop narrative only came about as white women started having black babies.

We’ve battled with this “ who’s really Black” since I was a kid in the 1950’s
The old “ light skin” vs “ dark skin”; “‘good hair” vs “ bad hair”
In the 50’s the word “Black” was rarely used
Except perjoratively
Call me “ Black” you’re liable to get punched in the face

Oh, wait Obama and Harris are suddenly not black, because of their white blood??
They count on the ignorance of white people, who don’t know anything about the history of racism in America, and then they play them.

That's the playbook, but it hasn't really worked. I do think it gives White voters another talking point, by stressing that it shows the candidate is dishonest.
