Horrible story all around.

- Car ran out of gas so dad and two sons push it down the street (they were close to home)
- Drunk driver plowed into them killing his two young kids
- "Allegedly" the dad ran to his house, grabbed a gun, and killed the drunk driver
- Texas court acquitted him on murder charges

I'm still up in the air about this. Its a terrible thing to have your kids die in front of you never mind to a drunk driver. I can't say I blame him. Theres a good chance I would do the same thing he did.

On the other side, is vigilante justice. He took the law into his own hands and most likely did shoot and kill that driver. I know its Texas and they do things differently down there, but I don't know if I can get on board with that. He should have let these dudes rot in a prison cell for 20+.

It's easy to say something like this when it's not your own sons that were killed, if the situation happened to you, and some drunk dude stumbled out his car holding a Budweiser you'd probably kill him too. It's a natural reaction :yeshrug:

That's not the point though. If I did it, I'd deserve to be charged with murder, as would anyone.

Any competent legal system *should* occupy a place higher than our most basic instincts.

But these things happen all the time without people taking the law into their own hands. Daughters get raped. Sons get molested. Drunks kill families....the high majority of people leave it to the law.

Of course, to be fair, there does seem to be some room for a legal defense here. Maybe it wasn't an open and shut case.

Would you have agreed with the verdict if the guy was caught with weapon in hand, and admitting that he killed him?

The majority of people leave it to the law because they're not there when their family members get mowed down, nearly everyone in this country would have the same reaction he had if they were there at the time their children were killed by a drunk driver. When people are around to defend their children the outcome is usually assault, attempted murder or murder.

All of this could have been avoided had this dude not been driving drunk, 3 people would still be alive. I'd want that man acquitted even if he was caught with the gun in his hand, just like I'm glad the dude that beat the pedo to death didn't get charged.
