I have a different opinion....I think highlighting his past is an effort to humanize ex-cons and shake the idea that non-violent criminals should be defined by their crime. Ex-cons (combined with being black) are unjustifiably treated as the scourge of the earth. This brave act is a counterpoint to the anti ex-con narrative, and Im sure the brotha in question is quite proud of the strives he's made in his life when the chips were stacked against him.
