Brehs I bought my 09 Civic with ~70K miles for 11K in January

Check out this 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550 on Autotrader

:mindblown:

This shyt should be like $50-60K not $20K

You go back another body it's even worse

Check out this 2004 Mercedes-Benz S600 on Autotrader

Twin turbo V12 for $9K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do they fall off like this :damn:
Depreciation. It's been around for long time.

You are getting a fancy interior compared to a new car of the same price. The only thing you are buying into is a money pit. You can fix up an old Mercedes to run reliably, but parts and labor are expensive. If you can repair it yourself, then that's all better for you.

$20,000 for the S550 is a nice deal. If you think about, back in 2007, you would have to making in the six-figures to buy that car.

Crazy how dated that shyt looks. MB needs to go back to the quad lights on the E class. And Lexus needs to do the same with the GS because the current version has zero personality. 5 Series is killing both of those shyts

Short Answer: buyers just aren't out there for a 3-4 year old $70k S Class. so the market dictates that it has to be lower.

Longer Answer:
It's because 99% of the people who can afford a new one lease (usually a business write off).

So after the 3 year mark when the majority of leases end. All of the out of lease cars FLOOD the market. Those same people we were just talking about go and grab a new body/model year right after dumping their lease. Leaving their scraps for us plebs.

And since the rich guys are too good for the 4 year old S Class, and the 4 year old S Class is probably too expensive for us. The market makes things right and depreciation is higher.

After you factor in out of warranty maintenance costs, other costs of ownership and other hassles imagined or not....a lower price is the only way they can move them.

Also....year 4 of a new body is the best time to cop. That's when the prices drop like rocks and all of the new bodies come off of lease.

If you knew how to rebuild engines, you could save a lot of money on a luxury car buy buying a high mileage MB or BMW and rebuilding the engine. You would be able to drive that engine for over a 100,000 miles.
The main things that wear down are the piston rings and gaskets and seals. Those parts, all by themselves, are relatively inexpensive. You would also replace the head studs and water pump too. Taking the block out, disassembling the block, cleaning it out, re-boring the piston cylinders, reassembly and putting the block back in are the major things stopping your average person from doing it themselves. The cylinder head would probably only need to get the exhaust and intake valves reshimmed if you didn't want to take it apart for a thorough cleaning.
