Man wins tax evasions case by claiming religious privilege

He refuses to pay taxes because he opposes abortions. He just beat the feds in court

So this guy told the IRS in 2013 he wasn't going to pay his taxes. In court, he claims that because his taxes go to funding facilities which provide abortions, that due to his religious beliefs, he cannot in good conscious continue to pay taxes. Since he also voluntarily reached out to the IRS and told them as much, he can't be charged with tax evasion. He finessed some accounts but the judge actually agreed with this guy and found him not guilty.

So can this be a one-off or is there (for the moment) an actual legal basis for legitimate tax non-payment?

Story is misleading. He's self-employed so he doesn't have to worry about unemployment, medicare or retirement deductions that employers automatically take out.


Judge must be dumb as shyt. ALL of his taxes don't go towards abortions.
