Gonna say this in high school most of the black kids stayed far away from middle/long distance events like 800 meter to 2 mile. It was always those white boys that didn’t cross country in the fall that excelled at those events. I'm assuming that the best athletes were all funneled into soccer before. Just takes some of their elite athletes to go into another sport to boost the program.
