If the amenities are gone that becomes a huge blow to the lifestyle reasons for living in a place like nyc. Places like Momofuku closing shops permanently shows that trendy places were operating on slim margins. But this could end up being a boom for cities that could later absorb that talent/aesthetic with lower costs of entry.

I am interested in how fast NYC real estate owners are going to cut prices.

gentrification happens in and second and third tier cities/states etc

Everyone has to find the right balance, while it’s great to cut down overhead (company benefit) or commutes (employee and environmental benefit), there is something lost in company culture, rapport, trust, and relationship building by having everyone remote, this especially impacts people of color in less diverse work places as well as women.

I also like socializing, cant chat and gossip the same on slack when you can’t eavesdrop to get the scoop on things and share

This is what we are trying to get away from. If you want to socialize, find some real friends. We are working to give a service and get paid for it. Not for all the other BS.

How does having work friends = not having “real friends” or them not becoming real friends (I have three really great friends from a job I was at 2014-2016, my best friend’s other best friend is someone she met at work a few years ago). Not sure when this anti social generation stopped seeing work as another social circle - my parents, siblings and many of my friends all have friends from work.

Furthermore your friends a are busy working during the day - how would you socialize with them the same way you would people you’re in the office with?

Lastly, I’ve worked in great companies where we actually were all around the same age, liked each other and kicked it hard, sorry you've never had a workplace and coworkers you liked :yeshrug:

You can't place your personal anecdotes over an entire generation's wishes :yeshrug:. I have had some positive experiences as well but literally 92% of millennials said way back in 2013 that they'd prefer to work at least two days a week from home. What people are talking about is changing the default rule of going into the office. A company is free to have its own policies, but it would have to recruit those type of people.

I have no issue with working part of the time from the home, my whole original post was about finding balance. I’ve never subscribed to the whole need to be in the office 8-10 hours everyday to work. I also don’t feel like companies should jump head first into getting rid of all their offices either

WFH is cool, but idk about 5x a week/50x a year. Coming in 2-3 times a week or until lunch time is a much better situation to me. Come in for meetings, white boarding sessions and company events. Do your actual "work" at home.

I dont think many companies will be 100% wfh. but i invision alot of companies moving to a few days a week for all employees. my company allowed my design team to all work remotely we are all located in different cities. but corporate has said since this transition has gone so well. they will open the office up and create schedules for people to come in but its not necessary for them to be in. this is also to for social distancing.

with that said ive heard people saying if this holds up they may move to different areas. so im curious how those in san fran and nyc etc etc are thinking.

Nobody is looking to go back into Manhattan to work anytime soon

i didnt realize how many people from nyc went back to their hometowns until i started clickin on peoples stories. I went to my moms to build this planter box yesterday and my neighbor who hasn't been home in forever basically brought her whole family 2 kids and all to stay with her parents. theyve been there since march!

People spending more time with their family alone is gonna have them re-evaluating what they value the most in their life. outside of opportunities you can do alot with good jobs in a mid size city you are already from.

im not saying to move back but im just trying to think as if i was them
