:scusthov:Even Peyton Manning felt that the Indianapolis Colts could not pass up the opportunity to draft Andrew Luck.

Manning, the four-time NFL MVP who led Indianapolis to 11 postseason appearances and a Super Bowl championship, advised the Colts to select Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, team owner Jim Irsay said during an interview with USA Today Sports.

The Colts have gone 15-7 since drafting Andrew Luck with the top overall pick in 2012.
At the time of the conversation, Manning was recovering from fusion surgery on his neck and the Colts were attempting to rebound from a 2-14 season.

"[Manning] said, 'You've got to take Andrew,'" Irsay told USA Today Sports. "'You have to. You're crazy if you don't.'"

The Colts eventually did take Luck with the top pick after releasing Manning, who has flourished since signing with the Denver Broncos.

The Colts will host the undefeated Broncos on Sunday night in Manning's heavily anticipated return to Indianapolis. Indianapolis (4-2) owns sole possession of first place in the AFC South while Denver (6-0) is tied with the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs atop the AFC West.

After passing for 4,659 yards and 37 touchdowns last season, Manning is on a record-setting pace this year. The 37-year-old leads the NFL with 2,179 passing yards and 22 touchdowns -- a league record through six games.

Indianapolis also has thrived in the post-Manning era thanks to the 24-year-old Luck, who led the Colts to a surprising 11-5 record and an AFC wild-card berth last season.

Luck passed for an NFL rookie-record 4,374 yards last year while the Colts matched the second-biggest single-season turnaround in NFL history with their nine-win improvement.

"I think it's perfect," Irsay told USA Today Sports. "What's happened is what Peyton and I hoped would happen. The desire was for him to get well and get to a team that has a chance to win another Super Bowl before his career ended.

"And our desire was to be able to transition to Andrew. To be so good so soon is stunning."

Jim Irsay had to do it.. Even Peyton realized it.. Luck will probably win 2 SBs and go the Hall of Fame.. Teams spend years looking for that QB.. The Colts had one sittin there. Peyton is 37.. The Colts will now have 30 yrs of great QB play which is un heard of.

It was the right move.

I mean I thought it was a consensus that you have to take Luck in that position. People seemed to forget or ignore that NOBODY knew if Peyton would even be able to come back at all. His injury was unprecedented and nobody knew what type of player they would get back. With the salary cap hit we was gonna take there was really no other options.

I think Luck is a nice player, but i'm starting to think he is grossly overrated, he looks the part more than anything, winning two superbowls?? based on what? dudes just think that shyt is easy. If you look at Luck's numbers, they are a little worse in comparison to Wilson and similar to Cap, Newton, and RG3, yet everyone is saying Luck is having this great year and everyone else is struggling, and lets not forget Luck has the most talent around him by far right now

What's the Colts' Record right now? Pretty good right? Luck throws INTs when he airs it out.

Luck has more arm talent than most of those guys. I don't know why you include Kaepernick in this discussion because he's overrated and older than the rest.

He's their best player, taking the ball out of his hands is stupid. Especially to hand it off to guy they had no business trading for.

Irsay drafted Manning over Leaf, Drafted Edgrin James over Ricky Williams, hired multiple GM of the year Bill Polian, hired Dungy, Got rid of Peyton to get Luck, Hired coach of the year Bruce Arians, GM of the year Ryan Grigson, and in general has instilled a culture of winning in the Colts organization.

Acting like all he's done is draft Luck and Manning is not true and a shot at all the great moves he has made

He also traded one of the best backs ever in his prime. Everything looks good when you have Peyton Manning. Where's Jerry Hughes at these days?
