I get this being the reason why some want to advocate not sample snitching, but I wonder if that's still the case with newer artists. Wanting 80-100% is essentially anti art. From what I've seen, that type of attitude seems to be from people who don't respect hip hop as an artform so i associate that with older artists. I know it definitely has to be annoying to have worked on something and for the artist to want to take all, but it comes with the territory. They themselves sang, played the instruments and/or paid for people to play.
That was one of the reasons.
But it was also about the
creativity aspect. Pete Rock was mad at Q-Tip in '91 because he saw records that Pete was using for samples and went and copped the same joints to make "Jazz (We've Got)". People didn't want you knowing what they used because they felt you'd either bite or start making sh*t from the same people they used for samples. That's why Herc used to cover the labels on the records and breaks he played at parties. They didn't want you knowing what they were using.
So it's been mad reasons. There's really no useful reason to sample snitch, unless you're working for an older artist and tracking to see who used their sh*t, so they can get paid. If that's not the case, nobody should be worried about it. The solution back in the day, was to go diggin' and see if you could find the sh*t on your own, by chance. I used to find a lot of samples people used by just doing my own diggin'. That was the way. You knew better than to ask somebody else what sample they used, lol. That was a violation.
