Breh it's even worse than that. Pistons had 4 / $80 million on the table for him.

Are the Detroit Pistons right? Or will Kentavious Caldwell-Pope win his bet?

Factor in the difference in state tax rates for half the total salary (since half of all games played are home games), and shyt gets even crazier.

Michigan has a flat state income tax rate of 4.25%. On top of that, anyone working in the City of Detroit must pay at least 1.2% if they're a nonresident, and 2.4% if they live within the Detroit city limits. Assuming KCP lived outside the city limits, he'd owe 5.45% in city / state taxes ($2.18 million over the 4 years / $80 million contract - remember, those local / state taxes are only paid on home games) if he'd stayed with the Pistons.

Going to LA over those same 4 years, KCP earned:

2017-2018: $17,745,894
2018-2019: $12,000,000
2019-2020: $8,089,282 (Year 1 of the new deal he just signed)
2020-2021: $8,493,746 (Year 2 of the new deal he just signed).

His gross earnings in LA will be $46,328,922. So he's already taken a 42% haircut to play in LA - and that's just on gross terms.

Net of CA state income taxes though, it's materially worse. The top marginal tax rate in CA is 12.3% for any income over ~$570,000. And any income above $1 million pays an additional 1%, for a top rate of 13.3% for income beyond $1 million.

Ignoring taxes owed below that $1 million threshold each year (just to make the math easier), and calculating the total tax based on only half his annual salary (to reflect that only half of all games are played in the state of CA) KCP had (or has upcoming) the following CA state income tax bills:

2017-2018: (($17,745,894 - $1,000,000) / 2)*0.133 = $1,113,602
2018-2019: (($12,000,000 - $1,000,000) / 2)*0.133 = $731,500
2019-2020: (($8,089,282 - $1,000,000) / 2)*0.133 = $471,437
2020-2021: (($8,493,746 - $1,000,000) / 2)*0.133 = $498,334

Total state of CA taxes owed: $2,814,873

KCP's gross pay will be 42% lower in CA than in Detroit...and he still ends up paying at least $634,873 more in taxes...and that's ignoring taxes on the 1st $1 million every year in CA :picard:

Coli is pathetic. Agents literally get fired constantly. And these aren’t two big name players. But this thread is doing numbers based around LeBron and Rich Paul bashing. Sad and incredible.
