Unrelated to the water, but on land if you are ever without food you can always catch food by understanding a techniqye called persistence hunting.

You see, aside from humans very few animals sweat.
This means animals are not designed to run long distances because they will overheat and collapse.

If you chase a cat or a rabbit you may notice it will burst to flee from you then stop across the street from you. It only runs til its out of immediate danger because most predators must also pursue it in bursts.
Humans almost exclusively retain the ability to simply chase an animal continuously until it simply cannot run any longer while our bodies are designed to run as long as we need to.

You can catch animals waaaay faster than yourself by simply continuing to chase it.
