They've done a lot of new stuff, it's just that it wasn't aimed at 'us'. Wii Sports, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing.
On the other hand, you've got a game like Kid Icarus Uprising. While not entirely 'new' in the sense it was already an existing Nintendo property, the game was critically acclaimed, up until the current 3DS Zelda without a doubt the best 3DS exclusive, and it sold roughly over one million copies worldwide. Meanwhile a game like New Super Mario Bros U sells over two millions copies in half the time... on a console that almost nobody bought!

They really haven't switched it up since N64 with mario tennis and shyt..which is odd because N64 wasn't AMAZINGLY successful and Gamecube was a flop all things considered.
