Oregon offense is basically spread + option run/pass. Success came heavily from reading the OLB/DE depending on 3-4, 4-3, 46, or 3-3-5. Doesn't require the QB to read defenses- which is why Dennis Dixon, Darren Thomas, and Jerimiah Masoli didn't have successful QB careers after college. Mariota is a bit different because he can actually read defenses. Although his Ducks offense didn't primarily operate off of reading defenses, he utilized that this past year in the playoffs- which was also his demise.
Baylor offense was spread + west coast + option run. No route tree for WRs (have a friend that played at BU), simply timing routes, complimented by a hell of a lot of screens. This success of this offense was built off of quick, let me be clear- quick passes, so we're talking 80s-90s sets. This is why many RG3 and Petty had/will have trouble adjusting because that 80s-90s game doesn't work at the NFL level. QB success is built off of reading the defense and climbing the pocket.

By gimmick I think dude is referring to reliance on the QB option, which Cam, RG3, Russell Wilson, Kaepernick, and now Mariota have relied on to open up the pass game. It's gimmick-y because using it can cause defenses to play the run which can lead huge yardage gains off of play action.
Good post but your premise is wrong. With that said, you explained Baylor and Oregon's offense quite well.

I think Cam does. I think he is more polished than said QB's. Cam got that big man from FSU that's going to help him out. The cat from Michigan may be a good pick up. Ginn in the slot. I except big tings from ya boi Cam.
Someone saying Cam doesn't have touch is an idiot. That's one of the best passing traits about him. Cam's issue is his accuracy especially short and intermediate can get away from him. It's McNabb like at times if not more than McNabb. I don't think that's fixable but what is, is his footwork and pocket awareness, you can improve that.

Thing is I think his footwork is quite impress compared to the other spead option QB. My main thing is they look awkard under center. Cam never did. Look at RG3, CK7, Alex Smith, etc. Their footwork is like :what: Give Cam talent. Watch Cam ball.

Cam is a upper body thrower with touch and accuracy issues.

While it's good for a mobile QB, he still needs work on it as he has been doing so this off-season.

Thing is he isn't a mobile QB. He is a option QB. There is a huge difference. Russell Wilson is mobile. Steve Young was mobile. Randall Cunningham was mobile. All of them already had the footwork because they didn't do that gimmick bullshyt and were under center most of the time. They also can read defenses. Spread option QB's not so much. This is only reason why I like Cam over the rest of said spread option QB. His footwork is better and he can read a defense better than the rest of them.

Mariota 8-9 for 94 yards with a pick, a sack, and a fumble: "He's going to be a bust!!!"

Jameis : 9-19 for 131 yards with a pick, 2 sacks, and 2 bobbled snaps: "Give him time! You all want him to fail!"

Exactly.
Way too early to be reading into pre-season performances.
Must admit though Jameis's pocket presence >> and made some nice throws too.

We've seen that it doesn't necessarily translate once the season starts.
