PS4′s Mark Cerny Explains What Works And What Doesn’t Work With Cloud Computing | DualShockers

Many are wondering what the heck this “Cloud computing” touted by Microsoft and somehow echoed by Sony can do and cannot do, and PlayStation 4′s Lead Architect March Cerny has his own answer to that question, as he explained as part of an interview on IGN.

"It’s possible to do computing in the Cloud, PlayStation 4 can do computing in the Cloud. We do something today: Matchmaking is done in the Cloud and it works very well. If we think about things that don’t work well… Trying to boost the quality of the graphics, that won’t work well in the Cloud."

There you have it, straight from the Lion’s mouth. If someone tells you that the “Power of the Cloud” will magically boost the visuals of your games, he’s probably pulling your leg.

(Editor’s Note: the following part is not from the interview, and it’s just the Editor’s technical assessment) Of course Cloud computing can somehow free resources to be used with graphics, but that’s an entirely different story altogether: if you offload elements like AI, limited physics, world simulation and similar to cloud computing, the local machine has more resources that can indeed be dedicated to rendering visuals.

The catch is that those elements offloaded to the cloud need to have a very limited data footprint. Larger data footprints will result in interfering with bandwidth to be used for online gaming and connectivity, and even more so will cause the game to be overly reliant on the quality of the internet connection, severely limiting what developers can do with it.
They surely don’t want the game to suddenly break or elements of it to start lagging of behaving unreliably because the user’s internet had a hiccup. This limitation means that the influence of cloud computing on graphics, even when freeing resources for them, is most probably very limited.

:youngsabo:

Cloud Computing = Glorified Name for Dedicated Servers as many have already said.

The cloud improving graphics. Is a concept that was created by Sony stans just so they could have something to argue against.

I have not heard one developer say the cloud will improve graphics. What they have said is that it allows them to make A.I./worlds larger and more dynamic. And that it can free up some local system resources.

As Internet connections and speeds get better the technology will evolve and get better.

LOL and he's like yeah we are doing matchmaking in the cloud... I think he's right in theory. Any memory freed up can boost the graphics on the system though... But I don't think the cloud is a priority for him. Also he's the creator of knack.

Funny part is. By trying to throw a jab at M$ he's admitting that their own plans won't work as good as sony fans hope they will.

Dedicated servers were basically renamed to "cloud" because its new and something to try to sell the uninformed. We have been downloading mp3 files, videos, and files from "clouds" since the internet was launched and we have been streaming media since dial-up...

:snoop: @ people still getting hyped about cloud computing. I am not even sure Gaikai will be much better than OnLive...we will see how it works.

Sounds like they will have something called "servers" on their end.

I could be wrong though and maybe it indeed is a fluffy cloud that our consoles will connect to :lupe:

do you agree that is pretty much synonymous with "the cloud"?

I'm pretty sure the PR department didn't think "application service provider" would be particularly catchy. I think Amazon was the one that popularized the term "the cloud". although this is from a 1996 patent:

Nah I agree from their end "cloud" sounds a whole lot sexier to the average consumer who views the term such as "servers" as too technical or nerdy.

I just think people are running with this whole "cloud computing" nonsense and are expecting the world to them. You and I know better and one of the biggest cons with "clouds" is that the performance is just not there when you compare it to a dedicated server. The benefit is scalability, but at the cost of performance. Which sounds like a recipe for disaster when you factor in that you are dealing with millions of connections at any given time.

I'll let the others tell me otherwise though...it's not like I read up on this shyt everyday or whatever. I wish people would stop falling for marketing tactics.

The cloud has always been a marketing term, and it's being used by a bunch of companies. "A bunch of connected servers that can be used remotely" just doesn't roll off the tongue very well. But that doesn't take away from the very real advantages the cloud enables.

The significance of the "cloud" as it pertains to the Xbox one, is that it uses one of the most advanced/robust cloud systems on earth. And it is supported/maintained by M$ so it's not such a huge investment for devs to use the cloud. Also the console/dev tools were made with cloud computing in mind so a lot of the work is already done for the devs, they don't have to spend a bunch of time on R&D, worrying about how the console will work with the cloud, how many severe to rent, etc. All they have to worry about is coming up with some cool, new, innovative ways to use the tech.
